Potes lies in the heart of the Liébana area of Cantabria. It is an excellent family destination with Marco Topo because a visit combines history, culture and nature. This picturesque mountain town is famous for its monumental heritage and for the impressive natural landscape around it, dominated by the majestic Picos de Europa. In the Marco Topo adventure you will discover the Torre del Infantado, Potes’ most emblematic monument. Built in the 15th century, this imposing fortified tower has witnessed much of the area’s history. Today it hosts exhibitions and cultural events, while its terrace offers spectacular panoramic views over the town and surrounding landscape. Part of the game follows the riverside paths of the two rivers that meet in Potes, the Deva and the Quiviesa. The rivers and their bridges add special charm to the townscape, while their banks offer peaceful places to walk and enjoy nature. One of the adventure’s most important locations is San Cayetano Bridge, also known as the Old Bridge, a fine example of medieval engineering. This stone bridge with its characteristic semicircular arch is an ideal place for a peaceful walk and for photographs of Potes framed by the natural scenery of Picos de Europa National Park. Throughout the town you will see signs for the Camino Lebaniego pilgrimage route, which passes through Potes on its way to the nearby Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana. The monastery is famous for housing the Lignum Crucis, traditionally considered the largest surviving fragment of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It is an important pilgrimage centre and a place of great historical and spiritual value.
