Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo is a municipality in Córdoba province, in the Guadiato area. The Marco Topo adventure visits key landmarks that help families discover its important mining past and the industrial heritage created by this activity. Peñarroya and Pueblonuevo del Terrible were once separate municipalities. They merged in 1927 following the population growth generated by mining and associated industries. The French-backed Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya, known as SMMP, played a major role in the municipality’s industrialisation during the first half of the 20th century, turning it into one of Andalusia’s most important industrial centres. The Marco Topo game proposes a fun route through buildings preserved from this mining boom, including the Industrial Complex, Central Warehouse and SMMP administrative headquarters. It also visits the so-called French Quarter, where senior French managers lived. Several interesting examples of French-style architecture survive here, including the current library and residential buildings. Other route locations include Plaza de Santa Bárbara and its church, the Mining and Geological Museum and the Royal Mother Church. The game also follows part of the La Maquinilla Greenway, which connects Belmez and Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo along the trackbed of La Maquinilla, a former mining railway.
