The municipality of Onís is an ideal place to enjoy the landscapes of the Picos de Europa and unwind in an authentic rural setting. The Marco Topo adventure visits different places across the municipality, allowing you to discover Benia de Onís, Sirviella, Bobia de Arriba and Bobia de Abajo. In Benia de Onís you will visit the Church of Santolaya and learn interesting facts about Asturian cider and Gamonéu cheese. This cheese has Protected Designation of Origin status and has traditionally been made in the Picos de Europa. Shepherds have produced it for generations in mountain huts in the mayadas, or high pastures where their livestock graze. At the Las Montañas del Quebrantahuesos Visitor Centre you will discover the majestic bearded vulture, an endangered scavenger bird that conservation programmes are working to restore in the Picos de Europa. The exhibition introduces other animals that share its habitat and explains the necessary coexistence between extensive livestock farming and this scavenger. At a nearby bird observatory you can also see other species nesting in the Picos de Europa. The Marco Topo game follows the riverside path along the River Güeña, where you may see Asturias’ two native cattle breeds: Asturiana de los Valles and Asturiana de la Montaña. In Sirviella you will visit a tower that is an example of local vernacular architecture, a traditional Asturian hórreo granary and La Oveja Feliz farm, where you can interact with chickens, rabbits, donkeys and horses. You will also see the Demués cheese dairy in Bobia de Abajo, an artistic mural in Bobia de Arriba and the viewpoint at the Llano Miyar recreation area.
