The development of this town on the River Tormes is closely linked to the House of Alba, one of Europe’s most important noble families. The family name itself comes from the title of the Duchy of Alba de Tormes. Alba de Tormes is also closely associated with Saint Teresa of Ávila, founder of the Discalced Carmelites, mystic writer and Doctor of the Catholic Church. She came to Alba de Tormes in 1571 to found the Monastery of the Annunciation. She died in the town eleven years later, and her remains are kept here and visited by thousands of pilgrims. Through clues and challenges, the Marco Topo adventure introduces the places in Alba de Tormes associated with Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross, as well as aspects linked to the Dukes of Alba. The game visits monuments connected with these historical figures, including the Castle of the Dukes of Alba, the Carmelite convent and Saint Teresa’s tomb.
