Located in Herrera de Pisuerga in the province of Palencia, the Marqués de la Ensenada tourist boat lets you navigate the Canal de Castilla, a major feat of hydraulic engineering built between the 18th and 19th centuries with the aim of linking Segovia and Reinosa. Its channel was dug directly into the ground with picks and shovels! During the journey, Marco Topo guides families through the canal's main features. Throughout the route, the game focuses on a fascinating fact: how this artificial construction has become a natural habitat for countless plant and animal species. Another way to enjoy the natural surroundings of the Canal de Castilla is to walk along the towpaths. Horses and donkeys once used these paths to pull barges along the canal. The terrain is flat and well suited to walks with children, including pushchairs, and to fun family bike rides. On the Canal de Castilla in Palencia it is also worth visiting Frómista to see its famous four-lock staircase and the wonderful Romanesque Church of San Martín.
