Discover Las Merindades by playing
We propose five interactive routes for exploring Las Merindades in Burgos province as a family. Choose the route that suits you best and the places that interest you most until you become an Official Marco Topo Guide to Las Merindades. Route 1: Through the Obarenes Mountains On this route Marco Topo visits emblematic places in Frías, Trespaderne and Oña, together with sites of scenic or cultural importance such as the Portuguese Cave, Tedeja Fortress and the waterfalls of Tobera. Route 2: Land and the Castilian language As well as visiting the historic centre of Medina de Pomar, the Marco Topo adventure includes challenges in beautiful natural places such as Monte Santiago and the Nervión waterfall. The route also visits Valpuesta, whose collegiate church preserved cartularies containing some of the earliest documented words in Castilian. Route 3: Mountains and caves Espinosa de los Monteros and Villarcayo are the main historic centres on this route, which also visits emblematic landscapes of northern Burgos such as the Ojo Guareña Natural Monument and Puentedey. Route 4: Around Peña Angulo This route is organised around Peña Angulo and visits Villasana de Mena, the Peñaladros waterfall and the source of the River Cadagua, among other attractions. Route 5: Along the River Ebro This route visits the beach at Arija and the town’s historic centre. Other highlights include the Las Pisas waterfalls and the Monastery of Santa María de Rioseco.
